Sundial stones in a Scottish garden — the restoration

Ancient sundial pillar after restoration

A falling tree broke off the top of this pillar in Storm Arwen. The two sundial stones fell down to the ground. The pillar now has a new top section matched to the original stone. The sundial sections are clean and restored.

In November 2021, Storm Arwen caused serious damage with very strong winds especially in eastern Scotland. On one country estate an oak tree crashed onto this historic sundial in the family garden. It smashed the ancient pillar supporting the sundial stones. The family wanted to see the sundial fully restored.

The sections of the sundial are different from each other. The stone ball is a globe terminator sundial, which is complete in itself. The stone with wings is a cruciform equatorial sundial that ought to be tilted to a correct angle not horizontal. In fact the stones do not belong to a single complete sundial, although their carving is by the same hand and they do date from the 17th century.

The family know little about the stones or their history, and they were intrigued to learn about their original purpose. The stones may have come from another family property long since demolished. At some point someone used the stones to build up this elegant sculpture in the garden, it is rather beautiful.
