British Sundial Society Open MeetingThe British Sundial Society open meeting held today at Stockcross village near Newbury was welcoming and fun. Damhead Nursery opens its gates once again to welcome gardeners, designers, landscapers, plant lovers and everyone who likes beauty in a garden. The sculpture exhibition brought together exclusively for the end of August will show off remarakable work by accomplished local artists in metals and other materials.
The sundial display that is proving such a success at Damhead earns a deserving place in the whole exhibition. “We are enjoying the very positive feedback we get from our visitors about your stand!” says Sue Gray, while she plans the arrangements. There is wine tasting on the Friday afternoon, and the gates are open for the weekend. Open Friday to Sunday, 30 August to 1 September.

A sundial stone inscribed with the date 1666 was found some twenty years ago at a place called Duncraggan on the southern edge of the Scottish Highlands lying in a pile of rubble. From this unlikely beginning developed a tale of mystery and surprise. The stone’s owner wanted to know if it was genuine? The story was taken up by Alastair Hunter who carried out researches and then restored it as a working sundial. Continue reading

‘Sun Salute’ the latest sundial sculpture by Alastair Hunter has been accepted into the inaugural appART Art & Sculpture Exhibition at Secretts, Milford, Surrey. This exhibition on open grass lawns surrounded by fruit orchards and with light and airy indoor space is an exciting successor to the long established VivArtis exhibition previously held at King Edward’s School, Witley, nearby.
